At Nelumbo Jiu-Jitsu Casa Branca Academy, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just a hobby – it’s a way of life.
Established in 2008 by Professor Eduardo Torres, Nelumbo Jiu-Jitsu Casa Branca Academy has proudly served the Oviedo community for 16 years. While we’re competition-focused we also uplift each other and grow together as martial artists. We raise students to be confident in their own strength and capabilities. Together, we learn to overcome obstacles and be our best selves through BJJ training. Whether you want to learn self-defense or become a champion, Nelumbo jiu-jitsu will help you succeed.

The Birth of a Vision
Years ago, my journey into the world of martial arts began. Japanese Jiu-Jitsu captured my imagination and became a part of my daily life. With each belt earned, I delved deeper into its intricacies, honing my skills in self-defense and the art of judo. The day I attained my 2nd-degree black belt marked a significant milestone, yet it also unveiled a new horizon of learning.
The Path to Mastery
It was during a visit to a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) school that I realized the gaps in my ground game. While my Japanese Jiu-Jitsu training had been comprehensive, the fluidity and technical prowess of BJJ on the ground mesmerized me. Recognizing the need to evolve, I made a bold decision – I exchanged my Japanese jiu-jitsu black belt for a white belt in BJJ, symbolizing a fresh start and a commitment to growth.
A New System Takes Shape
In 2008, the seeds of innovation sprouted as I opened the doors to my martial arts school in the humble confines of my home garage. Here, amidst the echoes of dedication and the scent of ambition, a new system was born. Combining the foundations of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu with the dynamic principles of BJJ, I crafted a curriculum that was both traditional and progressive.
The Journey Continues
As the demand for authentic martial arts experiences grew, so did my aspirations. Relocating to a CrossFit facility provided a small yet impactful space to nurture students’ skills and aspirations. The synergy between fitness and martial arts fostered a holistic approach to training, embodying the essence of a warrior’s spirit.
The Return to Roots
In the same year, I reclaimed my initial location, now transformed and energized by years of shared dedication. Here, within familiar walls, I witnessed a community flourish, united by the passion for martial arts and the pursuit of excellence. From humble beginnings to a thriving hub of learning, my school continues to evolve, fueled by the collective dreams of those who walk through its doors.

Today, as I reflect on the past decade, I see not just a martial arts school but a legacy in the making. Each student’s journey, each belt earned, and every lesson learned embodies the essence of perseverance and growth. Sensei is amazing with my 5 and 7 year olds. Teaches BJJ, discipline, and compassion. Crazy how good they can get in a couple of months. Take your kids here.

Sensei Torres is an amazing instructor with kids and adults alike. My kids have been under his guidance for just over a year and they both love the art of BJJ.
